“Sisu” Movie Review: A Brutal and Unapologetic Actioner

πŸŒ•πŸŒ•πŸŒ•πŸŒ—πŸŒ‘ 3.5/5

After years of warfare, ex-soldier Aatami Korpi embarks on a quest for gold in the rugged Finnish Lapland. But when Nazi soldiers cross his path, the stakes escalate into a violent battle for survival.

Unapologetic Brutality

“Sisu” doesn’t pull any punches. It’s a relentless rollercoaster of gore and action, leaving viewers breathless. The film’s outlandishness borders on absurdity, yet it revels in its own madness. Unlike Tarantino’s films or the “John Wick” franchise, “Sisu” doesn’t bother with subtlety. It’s a wild ride that assumes the audience can keep up without hand-holding.

Aatami’s Quest

Set against the backdrop of World War II’s final days, “Sisu” follows Aatami (Jorma Tommila) as he faces off against retreating Nazi soldiers. They steal his gold and try to end his life. Against all odds, Aatami escapes and embarks on a mission to reclaim what’s rightfully his. What follows is a visceral display of violence—crushing, stabbing, hanging, and explosions—all in pursuit of justice.

Remarkably, Aatami speaks only two sentences throughout the film. Yet, this silence doesn’t hinder engagement. Perhaps intentionally designed to tap into our subconscious, the violence against Nazis becomes strangely alluring. Aatami, with his rugged appearance, feels like a character straight out of a video game.

Helander’s Signature Violence

Jalmari Helander, known for pushing boundaries, delivers violence that fits seamlessly into “Sisu.” It’s not gratuitous; it serves the story. Jorma Tommila’s portrayal of Aatami is commendable—he makes an unbelievable role believable. Aatami’s fusion of Clint Eastwood’s spaghetti westerns and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator creates a captivating on-screen presence.

Viewer Discretion Advised

Watching Nazis meet their demise in “Sisu” may evoke moral unease, but the film’s entertainment value is undeniable. It surpasses even the adrenaline-fueled “John Wick” series. Just be prepared for graphic gore and violence.

In summary, “Sisu” is a mindless yet thrilling experience where brutality reigns supreme. If you’re a fan of unapologetic action, buckle up and enjoy the ride!
